Italian tripod manufacturer Gitzo announced this week that it is introducing a new light, all-purpose’ carbon tripod family. The new family includes 4 different sub-classes (starting from a compact Series 0, up to the sturdiest Series 3 for more heavy weight gear) with 3 or 4 leg sections.
The Mountaineer includes several interesting improvements over previous carbon tripods from Gitzo including increased rigidity and ergonomics, better ground level set mechanism (for shooting close to the ground), G-lock Ultra – a new leg locking system for the legs with better ergonomics and resistance, smoother, softer operation and reduced dust and particle sensitivity.
One of the most important new features of the Mountaineer family is its use of the new Carbon eXact – what Gitzo refers to as a revolutionary tubes that are even stiffer than found on previous Gitzo tripods to maximize rigidity and image stability. According to Gitzo: “Carbon eXact optimizes the fibre composition for each tube size, using HM (High Modulus) carbon fibre in the narrower tubes to make them stiffer. The tube diameters are also optimized: the final leg section of a 4 section Series 1 tripod is now 22.5% thicker than its predecessor”.
The lightest (series 0) weighs only 1.07 kg while the heaviest goes over 2kg depending on the version. They open up to a height of 131cm (for the series 0 short version) and up to 179cm (for the series 3 long version).
