Controlling the Flow of Light with an Umbrella

On this short Adorama video, pro photographer Joe McNally talks about controlling light when using an umbrella.

Umbrellas tend to throw light over a relatively large area. However in cases where you do not want this type of solution you can use something like the Lastolite 8-in-1 Umbrella (around $155 on Amazon) that can give you, as McNally demonstrates in the video, a little bit more control over the flow or focus of the light.

If you are interested in shooting with umbrellas be sure to view the previous videos on the subject “Umbrellas 101“ and “Shooting with Umbrellas – Photography & Video Tutorial” both with pro photographer J. P. Morgan.
