First Look at the Canon EOS 80D

Canon introduced today several new products including the new EOS 80D – mid range DSLR which will be the successor to the 70D. The company also introduced a new Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens and an interesting accessory for the lens – Canon PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adaptor. Finally the company added a new advanced compact camera – the Canon PowerShot G7 X II.

On this article we shall focus primarily on the new EOS 80D although we have to say that we actually find the Canon PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adaptor much more fascinating.

Specs for the EOS 80D

  • A new 24MP CMOS Sensor (APS-C with Dual Pixel CMOS AF)
  • DIGIC6 Image Processor.
  • 7560 pixel RGB + IR photometry sensor.
  • New AF system with 45 points (all points cross type). AF distance measuring point of maximum 27 points F8 and -3EV AF.
  • 3.0″ articulated touch screen.
  • Continuous shooting speed – 7fps (buffer – 77 JPEG/20 RAW).
  • Video: HD 1080p @ 60fps (with headphone and earphone jacks).
  • Viewfinder – 100% coverage.
  • Built-In Wi-Fi and NFC.
  • Price: Canon EOS 80D body only – $1200.

Besides the sensor it looks like Canon mostly worked on improving the AF system and metering as the rest of the camera seems very similar to the old EOS 70D.
