Earlier this week Zeiss introduced a very interesting set of products which includes a new lens – the Batis 18mm f/2.8 for E-mount but also a family of “Lens Gears” which help adapt Zeiss lenses to follow focus systems by adding.. well – you guessed it – gears.
The video above shows Jem Schofiel from theC47 gives an overview of the new lens gears from Zeiss. These are basically aluminium rings with 0.8 pitched gear. You can mount them without needing any tools at all which is nice and they come in four different sizes: mini, small, medium and large – and should fit the ZEISS Otus, ZEISS Milvus and ZEISS Loxia lenses.
They also include a rubber covered band, called GumGum, which features an adhesive surface which makes the inner diameter of the ring smaller thus supporting multiple lenses. The GumGum also protects against scratches and other damage to the focus ring of the lens.
On the following Zeiss website you can find prices for the new lens gears – they range between $180-$210 but you will need to bring your own follow focus system.
