Sony announced today two very interesting G and G-master full frame ultra wide angle zoom lenses. The first is the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM and the second is the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G. B&H had a chance to talk to a representative from Sony and shoot a bit with the new lenses.
Here is some info that we have on the two new lenses:
Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G
- Full frame lens, 12-24mm and F4 aperture.
- 17 elements in 13 groups including 4 aspheric elements, 1 Super ED and 3 ED elements.
- AF – Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor
- Nano AR coating.
- 7-blade circular aperture.
- The lens does not take (conventional) filters.
- Weight – 565 g / 20z.
The new Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G
Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM
- Full frame lens, 16-35mm and F2.8 aperture.
- 16 elements in 13 groups.
- AF – Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor & piezoelectric drive.
- Nano AR coating.
- 11-blade circular aperture.
- Filter – 82mm.
- Weight – 680 g / 24z.

With these two new lenses it seems that Sony more or less completed the basic line of pro level full frame lenses for their A7 and A9 series of cameras (yes, we know there are plenty of other lenses you wish they would come up with – but for most working pros – the line is pretty complete now).
As for pricing, the Sony 12-24mm F4 will be available this August for $1700, the 16-35mm F2.8 GM will be available in September for $2200
