Lumoid – Try Before You Buy Camera Gear

Lumoid is a new service which offers the option for renting photography equipment including cameras and lenses but also adds an interesting option to get credits for renting your equipment towards purchasing it if you decide that you like it enough to actually buy it.

There are lots of options to rent photographic equipment (at least in the U.S.), however Lumoid has a slightly different twist on this concept.  The company credits 30% of your rental cost for the past year toward the purchase price of the gear you are renting, so if you liked the gear you rented at least some of the money you paid to try it will not go to waste.

Although the current inventory of Lumoid doesn’t include a lot of the longer pro telephoto lenses that other rental site do, it does seem to have a decent selection of more popular cameras and lenses (at least ones that you have a chance of actually buying). Aarthi Ramamurthy – the founder of Lumoid – seems to have big plans for the new service. It is already renting other gadgets besides cameras such as Google Glass (for about $18/day) and has plans to expand the line into other products including 3D printers and other gadgets and products and make a completely different using/buying experience for all of us.
