Real-World Test: Samsung NX1

Earlier this week DPReview published this video looking at the new Samsung NX1 with professional wildlife photographer and photojournalist Jordan Stead in order to test the performance of the camera as a pro tool for a working photographer.

The NX1 is the first real attempt by Samsung to face off Canon and Nikon with a true level professional camera (more or less on the level of the new 7D MKII we looked at here recently). On paper this camera seems to have more going for it than anything else one the market right now and that includes a very innovative high res backbit CMOS sensor (the first of its kind), fast AF with an unprecedented number of cross-type points, 4K video, super fast shooting speed and much more. However as we have learned from previous Samsung cameras – on paper specs are all nice and well but it is the actual performance of the camera which dictates what you really gets – ans so far Samsung was struggling to keep up with the “big boys”.

As it seems the NX1 might be the first camera that can truly compete in the higher end market – however the company will have to be very open to the requests from professionals for changes and additions if it has any hopes of enticing any of them to move to its platform. Talking about a platform – the company currently has only 3 “pro” level lenses – the 16-50mm f/2-f/2.8m the 50-150mm f/2.8 and the 85mm f/1.4. We are hoping to test all of them in the not too distant future ourselves to see how they really work in the field.

The NX1 recently started selling in the U.S. and there are some rumors that Samsung will reduce its cost (the body alone currently sells for $1500 but with the very high-end 16-50mm f/2-f/2.8 “kit lens” it is almost $2800 and Samsung might want to do something to make this a bit more accessible).

We have already had a look at the NX1 when it was first released around Photokina and you can check out more info here.
