With a history stretching back almost 100 years, legendary German optical manufacturer Meyer Optik has recently introduced a redesign of one of their classic lenses and it is now going strong as a Kickstarter project.
Trioplan is the name of a classic lens by Meyer Optik – a German company funded by Hugo Meyer in 1916. The new version which is now on Kickstarter brings modern optical design with a touch of classic.
Some of the features of the new Trioplan
What seems to be the focus of the new Trioplan f2.8/100 is not necessarily super sharpness wide open but rather a very distinguishable “soap bauble Bokeh” (the company term, not ours). You can see some images in the video and below to get some idea of what exactly does this mean. This effect is achieved by the lens special design which includes a staggering number of rounded aperture blades – 15 to be exact (a number we have not seen on any other commercial lens to date).
Here are some of the specs released by Meyer Optik for its new Trioplan lens:
- Focal length: 100mm (full frame coverage).
- Aperture: max f/2.8.
- min shooting distance: 100 cm.
- Manual focus only.
- Filter size: 52mm.
- Aperture blades: 15 (the most of any lens that we know of).
- Mounts: Canon/Nikon/Sony E/Fuji/Micro 4/3 and M42.
- Price: $850 on Kickstarter at the moment (should be available in late 2015).
