Selena Gomez BTS and the Unbelievable Career of Director Sophie Muller

Last month singer Selena Gomez published a behind the scenes video of her “Lose You To Love Me”. Watching the behind the scenes a few things caught our eyes including the fact this musing video seems to be shot entirely using a smartphone but even more so that the director is Sophie Muller which by now directed hundreds of video clips including many that you have probably seen for some of the biggest names in the music industry. This weekend inspiration article is dedicated to her work.

There are very few people in the industry that can credit themselves with directing so many popular music videos as Sophie Muller. Born in the U.K. in the early 1960’s and starting her music video directing career in the late 1980s with the Eurythmics, Annie Lenox, Shakespear’s Sister, Björk and many others and going into this decade with huge names such as Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, One Direction and others. It hard to argue with this amazing client’s list but Muller rarely looks for the spotlight and almost never does interviews (we could not find a single video interview she had done in her more than 3-decade career).

Looking at the set of the video above you can again see that the entire thing was shot using smartphones (in this case at least 4 with possibly a few other angles). This is quite surprising and given the amount of crew and equipment on set it is clearly not done for a budget reason.

You can also see how some of the smartphones are used on a moving dolly connected on different mounts on the front of the moving dolly as well as the way some of the close-ups where shot using smartphones in larger cases. It interesting that Muller can actually monitor all these devices and view them in real-time as smartphones are not typically designed to record for long periods of time and send video back, but apparently it can be done.
