Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Interview (IBC 2023) Cloud editing, AI and more

During IBC 2023 we had a chance to talk to Simon Hall, Senior Technical Sales Specialist at Blackmagic Design about the latest features added to DaVinci Resolve (version 18.6, since then Blackmagic released another minor update).

Black Magic Cloud’s new functionalities

One of the new functionalities added to the latest version of Resolve is using the Blackmagic iOS app to shoot and transfer this footage live to Resolve for editing. While doing this from an iPhone is an interesting option, it is also supported by the recent Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 which opens a lot of interesting options.

At the moment there are no options for this sort of Cloud connectivity with Resolve available for 3’rd party cameras (we would really like to see this in the future), creating proxies and sending them to the cloud quickly is an option for faster remote editing (although you will obviously need to offload the footage first).

One interesting feature is that you can upload the proxies first but choose to upload the actual footage afterward so the colorist for example can start working after the editor.

DaVinci Neural Engine

While DaVinci Resolve 18.6 didn’t bring in any specific big updates to the Neural Engine of the software, these did come in 18.5 (and of course in 18). One example mentioned by Hall in our interview is the ability of the media page to group clips by people that are shown in them.

Another categorizing feature lets the Neural Engine automatically set a category (specific to audio for example). Audio transcribing and text-based editing is also important tool (and over time it is likely that we will see more languages added to it according to Hall).

DaVinci FX relight

One of our personal favorite recent updates to Resolve is the FX Relight which we recently covered on LensVid Talk episode 2. This tool is amazing for adding and manipulating the light in a scene and although it can be very taxing on the hardware the results are quite amazing.
