Tip: Using Black and White Adjustment to Improve Colors in Photoshop

On this video Photographer Jimmy McIntyre from TSL demonstrates a simple technique for improving and controlling colors using a black and white adjustment layer.

The process here is really simple – add a Black and white adjustment layer and change the blend mode of this layer to luminosity. Now you can play with individual colors effecting only these specific parts of your image.

Of course if you have areas where there is color that you will effect but you do not want to (say you have blue skies and blue water but you only want to effect the sky) use a black brush to mask out those parts – simple and super useful as McIntyre demonstrates on 3 different images.

We have covered many (many) videos where adjustment layers were an important part of the editing process.
