Tips for Retouching a Face in Photoshop
On this video Colin Smith from PhotoshopCAFE shows how to do some face retouching of a face in Photoshop.
Smith moto in retouching faces in Photoshop is to start bug and move small. In other words start with the big things, the big problems that you need to fix and than move to the smaller issues when retouching.
Smith starts with working with the image in camera RAW (which is our recommended way of working on an image – even if you only have a JPEG). Smith also suggest for portraits to increase the temperature just a little bit – say +3.
Next we move to fixing the hair (we have much more advanced videos on that here) and than fixing blemishes (there is another more extensive video on this here). A simple method Smith shows is to create a new layer and fix it in a way which is not super precise and than reduce the opacity of the layer until you are happy with the result – this might be good when you want to work quickly.
The next stage is to work with dodge and burn (much more on this in these videos) making some parts of the image darker or brighter over a 50% grey layer. One of the final stages is to remove some red from the eyes (much more on eye retouching in Photoshop here). Finally Smith play with colors and adding a curve adjustment layer to make the image ready.
