Using Textures to Enhance Your Photos

NY based fashion photographer Lindsay Adler talks about adding textures to images and using blend modes in Photoshop for enhancing your images.

Sometimes we want to enhance our images by adding an interesting background or texture. You can take pictures of interesting backgrounds, create them from scratch using Photoshop or download them (there are many free ones and even more if you are willing to pay a bit). The important part is to know how to integrate the background with your image using blending mode to make them work in harmony.

On this video Adler gives a brief demo of how to use blend modes with an image and she recommends to try first darken, soft light, multiply and overlay first. For the image she picked Adler used soft light however this left us with some unwanted texture on her face and arm – to remove this she used a layer mask and painted black on these areas and it removed the texture.

We have looked at both blending layers and adding textures to images in Photoshop in the past – check out “Adding Texture to Photographs Using Photoshop” with Julieanne Kost, “How to Add a Background Texture to a Portrait in Photoshop” with Aaron Nace and a great basic basic tutorial for blending layers – “Understanding Blending Modes in Photoshop” by JesĂşs Ramirez.
