On this video, photographer, Christopher Frost takes a look at the new Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 for Sony Full Frame mirrorless cameras that was only recently announced to see how it performs in the real world.
The wider side of this lens is tiny, made from metal but very light. The focus ring is very well made and the AF seems to work quickly but in video, it seems to slow down a bit (we noticed this issue with other Samyang lenses in the past).
In terms of sharpness – this is a very sharp lens indeed – on a FF high megapixel camera (the A7RII with 42MP) the center is very sharp even at f/2.8 and the corners are a bit soft but if you want perfect corner sharpness you will need to stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 where both sharpness and contrast are very good. On an ASP-C camera (the A5100 in this case) the performance is pretty similar (again – stopping down to f/5.6 or f/8 – you will see very good sharpness and contrast in the corners).
The lens min focus distance is 24cm (9.5″) but you will need to stop down for a sharp image. Flaring is also an issue so use the lens hood whenever you can.
As for pricing, at $400 this lens is pretty competitively priced if you are looking for wide FF lens for your Sony camera and want something small and light at a reasonable price.
