Today we are proud to publish our interview with Mr. Kazuto Yamaki, Sigma’s CEO recorded last week during IBC 2024. Among the topics are the new 28-105mm lens and the future Sigma 28-45mm T2 Cine shown for the first time at the show.
Key topics
- Sigma 28-45mm T2 Cine zoom – this new lens was shown for the first time at IBC 2024. The lens is a prototype (Sigma calls it a concept model since they don’t know yet if it will end up as a product although we have a good feeling about it). This very interesting lens is a Cine lens with hard stops and gears on all 3 rings (focus, zoom, and aperture) that has the same optical and mostly interestingly AF system as the stills 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN by Sigma. We have no more details about the lens but we can only hope that this is the first of a line of hybrid AF Cine series of lenses by Sigma.

- Sigma 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN Art – the second lens on display at the show was the newly released 28-105mm F2.8 lens. We wanted to know how this lens was developed and Mr. Kazuto Yamaki explained that they started by trying to develop a 24-105mm f/2.8 lens (sort of an extended 24-70mm f/2.8) but that would have resulted in a lens that is too big and heavy so they moved to 28mm.
They also considered an optical stabilizer but this would also make the lens too bulky and they concluded that below 150mm the sensor stabilizer is good enough.

- Sigma VR lenses? We asked Mr. Kazuto Yamaki about Canon’s VR lenses and if Sigma is interested in this niche. He stated that while Sigma has no current plans to make a VR lens he is very interested in this type of innovation that is outside the common/existing market.
- Future FP cameras – we wanted to know if Sigma is still committed to the continued development of its FP line and Mr. Kazuto Yamaki confirmed that making cameras is still something Sigma is committed to (as part of the dream that his father, the founder of Sigma had for many years)— no specific details on any future camera where shared at this point though.
- Foveon sensor technology – Talking about cameras, we wanted to know what is the status of the Foveon sensor technology developed by Sigma. Earlier in 2024 Mr. Kazuto Yamaki mentioned in an interview that the company is still working on the technology although it needed to scrap the original design due to unresolvable design issues and start over. Mr. Kazuto Yamaki told us that the sensor is still in development, Sigma has an internal time frame for the development but it is not ready to share it at this point.
- Future of camera Market as of late 2024 – We asked Mr. Kazuto Yamaki how he sees the camera market in late 2024 after several years of COVID and global supply chain issues. He feels that Sigma has been growing and doing well through these difficult times but it remains to be seen how the camera industry which has been shrinking year after year since 2013 will do in 2024 especially if we will see the pro camera market grow.
