How to Add and Remove Fog in Photoshop

On this video tutorial by Aaron Nace from Phlearn shows how to remove fog using Lightroom with the new dehaze feature as well as adding fog to an image in Adobe Photoshop.

The first part of this video is simple and something we have seen in the past a couple of times both in Photoshop and Lightroom (see more below). Nace shows how you can remove haze/fog from an image using the new dehaze feature in Lightroom CC (also exist in the most recent Photoshop CC Camera RAW version).

What is more interesting (and maybe new to some users) is a completely different way of adding fog to an image that has nothing to do with dehaze. To add fog, create a new layer and fill it with 50% gray (Shift + Delete and fill with gray). Then, go to Filter >Render – Difference Clouds.

At this point you are going to get a B&W layer and here you are going to use blend modes to help you out. The Screen Blend Mode makes all of the darks in an image disappear. The clouds that you see will be just the whites. You can now transform these and make them larger or smaller and use layer masks to paint in specific areas of your image with these clouds.

We have already seen some tutorials covering the dehaze feature including H. Pinsky’s Does the Dehaze Feature Work on JPEGs in Photoshop? as well Quick Preview: The Upcoming Dehaze Tool in Lightroom by Terry White.
