This video by Brooklyn-based fine art photographer Spencer Lum (from ground-glass) touch upon a very sensitive (and in many cases painful) point a lot of photographers (and other freelancers) face: how to get paid more. More specifically, how to reach a point where your clients are willing to pay you the price that you are asking and how not to be judged on cost vs. quality alone.
From our experience this is indeed a problem in almost any type of occupation where you are providing a service and face direct competition. On this first video in the series Lum mentions one strategy and that is differentiation – making your work different than the rest – so different that the costumer won’t be able to directly compare what you do with what others are doing. This is a very good idea but always keep in mind that at the end of the day you need to serve a need that really exist in the market – otherwise people will most probably not pay you for it (unless of course you are able to convince them that they need it…).
