How to Upgrade Your Zoom H1 Recorder for $15!

On this short video tutorial videographer Caleb Pike from DSLR Video Shooter shows a simple neat DIY build that might help you make your Zoom H1 recorder a bit more versatile.

So you have a Zoom H1 and you are recording with it into your camera. But you have a few limitations that can be a bit annoying at times. First, you can’t use XLR mics, you also can’t use more than one external mic (if you want stereo sound) and if you want to connect your camera to the H1 and monitor the sound (and have no earphone out on your camera) you also have a problem.

So here is a quick and inexpensive fix from Pike. You will need a few inexpensive parts including:

  • Dual XLR to 3.5mm Jack.
  • Small 3.5mm Splitter.
  • Small Zip Ties.
  • Cold Shoe Adapter.

Optional items:

  • XLR to 3.5mm (if you just need a single one).
  • Short 3.5mm to 3.5mm male cable.

Keep in mind that this will not give power to your XLR mic so you will need to use a self-powered mic so keep this in mind.
