Konost Wants to Crowdsource Rangefinders

U.S. Start-up Konost is promising to bring a full-frame digital rangefinder camera to market in early 2016 following a crowd-source funding campaign.

Konost is reportedly going to use a 20MP sensor from CMOSIS for it’s camera which will have a sensitivity of ISO from 100-6400 with an 11 stops of dynamic range (15 extended), and video capability. The project is still in development and the camera will have an optical viewfinder with a 4 inch LCD, a hotshoe and a Leica M mount. The camera will be all aluminum alloy.

So what is so special about the Konost FF Rangefinder compared to say a Leica M? well, the company is promising a switch from mechanical rangefinder systems to an all digital system – this means that the overlay focusing system will be digital both in the viewfinder and the display – when you focus a secondary image will be overlaid on the first one just like you see in a rangefinder.

The future Konost FF Rangefinder

At the moment it seems that Konost still has a (very) long way to go to actually fulfill it’s promise of bringing a full-frame digital rangefinder. There will be both technological and legal issues to tackle (the later are not necessarily easier to solve than the first ones).

The company is also promising a very ambitious roadmap with a FF rangefinder development kit, APS-C camera and a small 1″ sensor body with an attached fast lens. We will keep you posted if, and what comes out of this project.
