How to Smooth Skin (Correctly) in Photoshop

On this extensive video portrait photographer Nathaniel Dodson (from the website tutvid) demonstrates what is the WRONG way to smooth a skin in Photoshop and than goes on to demonstrate how he thinks they right way should look.

If you ever seen a bad smoothing retouch in Photoshop this video is just what you need to see. There are people that for whatever reason use a very destructive blurring effect to smoothed the skin in order to remove blemishes – this result in a porcelain-like skin effect and if this is not what you are going for (and typically it isn’t – it looks bad – very bad).

Dodson shows a different technique which is much more precise – you don’t have to use all of it (as it is quite long) but even part of it should give you decent results, judging from the video.

We have looked at this topic several times in the past including “How to Quickly Smooth Skin and Remove Blemishes & Scars Using Photoshop” by Marty Geller from Blue Lightning TV, If you want a more delicate technique – check out Aaron Nace’s “How to Remove Acne in Photoshop” video we published here a few months ago.
