Using Gels to Change the Scene

On this quick Adorama video, pro photographer Joe McNally talks using lighting with color gels to create a unique atmosphere in a photo.

Gels when used in the right way can dramatically contribute to the look of an image creating a more interesting, vivid atmosphere. You can combine gels with regular lights and as you can see in McNally’s example they can be used to create different illusions (for instance – mimicking the light from a cinema projector).

Earlier this year photographer Mike Brehaut did a short Gel related tutorial which shows a few other examples of what you can do creatively when using colored gels
