Sandisk Introduce World’s Highest Capacity SDXC Card

Sandisk announced today the highest capacity SDXC card on the market with an unbelievable 512GB of space for all of your high res images and ultra high resolution videos.

The new SanDisk Extreme PRO series of SDXC memory cards includes three new models ranging in size from 128 to 256GB and finally 512GB. All cards in this series are rated at 95MB/s read and 90 MB/s write speed – just like the older SanDisk Extreme PRO cards (Sandisk is very bad at giving new names to its new memory cards as you can see).

The largest version of the new series will be able to hold an astonishing number of high res JPEG images – almost 50,000 should be able to be stored in the card and over 20,000 RAW images with countless of super high definition high bitrate videos shot in 4K.

The main difference between the older series and this one has to do with support for the new UHS Speed Class 3 standard. It does not support the UHS II standard (which almost no current cameras support). This is a good chance to remind ourselves what both of these new memory card standards mean:

  1. UHS II – the second generation standard for the Ultra High Speed bus. This iteration doubles the theoretical upper transfer speed limit to 312MB/s (from 156MB/s on the UHS-I). The new standard requires an additional row of physical pins (see video/image).
  2. UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) – set the minimum speed limit of the card at 30MB/s (important for high bitrate videos).

The only Sandisk card which does support both these standards is the SanDisk Extreme PRO 280MB/s SDXC UHS-II that we have tested here recently and is the fastest memory card we have tried to date (although it currently does not reach such large capacities as the card announced today.
