SmallRig MagicFIZ Wireless Follow Focus System First follow focus by SmallRig

SmallRig recently announced a new follow-focus system known as the SmallRig MagicFIZ which offers several interesting features.

We first caught a glimpse of the MagicFIZ at IBC 2022 where the company gave us a demo but asked that we will wait until the announcement before publishing anything (although you could get a brief look at the product on our first interview with the company from IBC around 0:54).

SmallRig has been expanding rapidly into more and more advanced areas of accessories recently with lights, batteries and now a wireless follow focus system (the company already has a manual follow focus it developed a while ago).

We are currently testing the MagicFIZ Wireless Follow Focus and we shall publish a review here on LensVid very soon.

SmallRig MagicFIZ features

The MagicFIZ is based on a small motor unit, a controller, and a handle (with an option for a handheld smaller unit). In ideal conditions, the official range of the unit (controller to motor) is said to be around 100m (or 330ft).

The motor and the controller have small OLED screens with lots of info including power, connection status, motor position, marks, and more. You can record from the controller either by using a cable or wirelessly to supported cameras (not all cameras work with this feature).

The MagicFIZ handle has a built-in 1400mAh battery that lasts approximately 20 hours (officially). The motor doesn’t have an internal battery, instead, it can either be physically connected to the handle with a USB cable or use a battery plate with an L-series battery for power.

The motor of the MagicFIZ can be mounted onto your rig using its single, built-in 15mm rod clamp.
