Atomos Shinobi II Hands On (IBC 2024) Shinobi II, Ninja phone, Sun Dragon and Shugon classic

During IBC 2024 we visited the Atomos booth and got a chance to check out several of the most recent products by the company including the Ninja phone, the Shinobi II, the Shugon classic, and the Sun Dragon flexible LEDs.

Ninja phone

This unit is similar to the Accsoon SeeMo that we reviewed back in 2022. It is designed to record video from a camera using HDMI with the help of special hardware in the unit to a mobile iOS device (iPhone or iPad) via USB-C.

The video is encoded in 10-bit H.265 up to 4K 30p using DCI Apple ProRes. Atomos recently promised to continue improving the unit with more features, including camera control.

You can purchase the Ninja phone for under $400.

Shinobi II

The second product we saw in IBC this year was the second version of the Atomos Shinobi monitor. This unit adds some useful features with the main ones being camera control.

The Shinobi II has a 5.2 panel with 1500 cd/m² so you can use it outside (although maybe not in direct sunlight) it uses the AtomOS 11 interface, USB-C PD power I/O with locking HDMI and according to Atomos should run all day on a single NP-F battery.

The Shinobi II sells for $350.

Sun Dragon

A product that is still not available (but can be pre-ordered at this point) is the Sun Dragon. This product is a white HDR LED that is 16 feet (4.8m) in length and can not be cut into parts or shortened.

The Sun Dragon is very different than a lot of other flexible lights that are quite common these days. It is IP68 rated so it can be fully submerged in 1m of water, it has an advanced controller called AirGlu with 2800K to 6500K or temperature range and should enable pixel control in a future update. It has CRI  of 99 and can be controlled via an app or CRMX and Wifi DMX and in the future via one of Atomos monitors as well.

An interesting feature of the light is the option to tell the controller which camera you use and it will adapt the color of the light accordingly (this is the first time that we hear about such a feature).

The Sun Dragon LED is available for pre-order for just under $1000.

Shugon classic

The Atomos 7″ Shogun recorder is a product that existed in the Atomos line for years, was discontinued for a while, and is now going to come back with slight modifications. The most important aspect of this monitor is the quad SDI recording and switching capability of the monitor

You can pre-order the Shugon classic for just under $1000.
