Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 (IBC 2023)

During IBC 2023 we got a chance to visit the Blackmagic Design booth and Talk to Simon who showcased the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and the Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 cameras and some of their main features.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K

The new Cinema Camera 6K looks very similar to previous models from the Blackmagic Cinema Camera family however the internals of the new camera are very different. The biggest change is the sensor. Unlike previous Blackmagic cameras, the new Cinema Camera 6K has a full-frame 24MP sensor capable of shooting video up to 6K at 36p (as well as Open Gate / 4K Anamorphic).

The camera uses an L-Mount (the company joined Panasonic/Leica/Sigma this September and this is the first camera as part of the “L-mount alliance “).

Here is some more info about the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K:

Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2

The second product we were shown at IBC this year was the new Micro Studio Camera 4K G2. Blackmagic was asked to produce a new version of the original micro studio camera for years and now it is finally here.

This tiny camera has no screen and can fit in the palm of your hand but it packs a substantial punch in terms of capabilities, especially when you consider its price tag.

The camera uses a Micro Four Thirds sensor and mount, it can shoot 4K up to 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 video (including Blackmagic RAW direct to an external USB-C device). It is equipped with 12G-SDI and HDMI (full size), tally, and camera return which makes setup fast. You can control the camera via an attached monitor such as a Blackmagic Video Assist to change settings through the menu overlay or check the position of a remote camera. You also get a USB-C expansion port for recording to external disks or controlling the camera via zoom and focus demands (or even use it with a USB-C to Ethernet adapter to control the camera over a network via REST APIs).

The Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2  is ideal for live-streaming especially when combined with HDMI switchers such as ATEM Mini (or more professional SDI-based switchers such as the ATEM Constellation).

At the show, we were especially impressed with how it functioned with the optional Blackmagic Design Zoom Demand and Blackmagic Design Focus Demand and how they functioned with the Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 setup on IBC (extremely smooth and precise).

Pricing and availability

When it comes to pricing both cameras are already available for order (although actual delivery might take a little bit more time) with the Blackmagic Design Cinema Kamera 6K selling for under $2600 and the Blackmagic Design Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 for under $1000.
