LC Tech Electronic Diffusion and Electronic VND (IBC 2024) Its finally here

During IBC 2024 we stopped by the LC Tech booth and had a chance to try the new Electronic Diffusion and Electronic VND system that the Sweedish manufacturer developed and hear about the first products coming to the market using this technology by Tilta and Metabones.

LC Tech Electronic Diffusion

The new technology demonstrated on IBC 2024 by LC Tech is electronic diffusion (think electronically controlled black mist filter). The advantage here is that you will not need to change the filter from 1/4 to 1/2 and can increase or decrease the amount of diffusion from the filer itself even more interestingly according to LC Tech the technology allows the user to change the diffusion differently in different areas of the frame (more in the corners less in the center e.g.).

At the moment we are not aware of any manufacturers that are working on electronic diffusion but as we will see next, what LC Tech had demonstrated in the past is finally getting into the market so if the market demands electronic diffusion there is a good chance that we will see it on the market at some point.

We also had a chance to see the electronic ND (more like VND) technology that LC Tech developed and this year we finally had product releases based on the LC Tech electronic ND technology from Tilta and Metabones.

LC Tech showed us at the show a prototype of a 5×4 electronic filter that can be controlled via a jog wheel.  Having this capability, especially for cameras that do not have a native ND could be a very welcome addition.

The two companies that have already marketed the technology are Tilta with the Mirage Pro Matte Box (upcoming) and Metabones eND Smart Adapter (EF to E) to be released soon.

The Metabones is an electronic Variable ND filter with 2 to 7 Stops (ND4 to ND128) that can be controlled with 1/2 of a Stop Increments and uses the power from the camera with support for AF and stabilization.

The pricing for the eND adapter will be around $600 and should be available in late 2024.
