During IBC 2024 we spent a great deal of time in the SmallRig booth and between participating in a workshop on product development and talking to the team about some upcoming products we are co-developing we also had time to try out the new Hydraulic Tribex fast opening tripod.
SmallRig x Potato Jet Tribex tripod
During IBC 2024, we had a chance to try out the new Tribex tripod. Potato Jet and SmallRig developed this tripod design based on a newly patented hydraulic system that allows the user to open all three legs with a squeeze of a handle. Even more interestingly, each leg can be opened to a different length, so you can open the tripod on a staircase, and the tripod will still be leveled.
Another advantage of the new design is the ability to
Here are a few technical details of the new tripod. The included fluid head can carry up to 13.2 lbs (just under 6kg) and the kit as a whole has a self-weight of 8.2 lbs (3.7kg), enough to carry most pro setups while still being fairly light (testing it in IBC it feels even lighter to us). The Hydraulic system legs can carry up to 77.1 lbs (34kg).
The included fluid head allows you to use the Manfrotto 501-style quick-release plate (or a DJI RS-style QR plate with the flip of a switch). The head can tilt +90/-60°, and the head has 1/4″ 20 with arri pin holes (the design of those looks more like a line for some reason) on both sides for accessories such as arms/monitors, etc.
You can order the Tribex Hydraulic Carbon Fiber Tripod from B&H for $800.
Here is how Potato Jet himself (Gene Nagata) showcases the Tribex tripod
