YC Onion PINETA Pro Monopod, Tako Tripod and Cedar Pro Head (IBC 2024) Monopod, tripod and new head

We are back from IBC in Amsterdam where we conducted dozens of interviews with many leading manufacturers and we are happy to open our coverage with a video from the show taken at the YC Onion booth where the company showcased a new PINETA Pro Monopod, a new Tako tripod and an upcoming pro level fluid head called Cedar.

PINETA Pro Monopod

Earlier in 2024 we reviewed the YC Onion Pineta Peak Tripod and before that in 2023 the YC Onion Pineta Monopod and FH60 Fluid Head. The new version of the Pineta monopod improved on the original design in several key aspects.

First of all, we now have a handle that can squeezed to raise and lower the monopod. This handle has a lock to prevent accidental pressing. Both the top and bottom parts have quick releases so you can remove the head and place it on the legs for low-to-the-ground work. On the top, you also have a lock for quick release so you will not release your head by mistake.

Talking about the legs, these are no longer to make the monopod more of a free-standing monopod. You also have a leg leaver similar to what we have seen from iFootage that will go back to the center position or allow you to move the monopod like a ballhead.

A feature that the iFootage doesn’t have is friction control for the monopod movement located at the bottom part of the monopod in a ring-style part close to the leg peddle.

Pricing for the Pineta Pro that is already available on the YC Onion site is just under $350.

YC-Onion continues to innovate in the tripod segment as well with a new Carbon Fiber Tako tripod design that is aimed at photographers and hybrid shooters. This small lightweight travel tripod has an innovative leg lock design. To open it you pull the legs and they are open it has a locking lever on the top of each leg that when open will allow you to close the leg or change its height (if you are on uneven ground).

If you remove the center column the tripod can go as low as 17cm from the ground. It has a 1/4″ 20 with arri pin holes for accessories and it will come in a kit with a fluid or ball head (it is not clear yet which one exactly).

It is not clear which head will come in the kit (ball head or fluid) but pricing will be somewhere around $300 and it should be available before the end of 2024.

Cedar Professional Fluid Head

The third product shown on IBC at the YC Onion Booth is the Cedar. This one is slated for early 2025 and is a full-featured pro-level fluid head with several interesting design choices including triple quick-release support for Arca, 501, and Sechtler plates no less than 6 levels and several other advanced capabilities.

One thing that we were delighted to see with this head was the fact that it can work with very light setups. Most pro heads can work with heavier loads and balance them but with small mirrorless setups balancing is challenging or downright impossible. With this head, we were able to balance a Sony A7 IV with a 35mm f/1.8 lens, a very light setup – Impressive.

There is no pricing set for the Cedar head but it should be available around Q1 of 2025.
