Blue Skies Without A Polarizer in Photoshop

On this video photographer Steve Perry (from backcountrygallery) shares a useful tip for getting those blue skies without using a polarizer in Photoshop. He also explains why you should probably avoid using a polarizer for shooting the skies when using a ultra wide angle lens.

The way Perry explains it – when using a polarizer on a wide (and especially UW) lenses  they give an uneven color cast on parts of the skies which is very hard to remove later on in post. For this reason Perry chooses to use a technique for fixing the blue skies using Photoshop. Keep in mind that you can use this technique for landscape images but they will work with other types of images as well.

Perry shows some examples of before and after the Photoshop retouch compared to a real image sow using a polarizer – you can decide for yourselves which one is better (to us at least the answer is quite obvious).
