How to Add a Grainy Film Effect in Photoshop CC

On this extensive video tutorial by portrait photographer Nathaniel Dodson (from the website tutvid) we take a look at how to add a film photo effect to your image in Photoshop.

Although Dodson suggest that the best way to create this effect is in Camera RAW or Lightroom you can still do it in Photoshop and this is what we are going to look at today.

Dodson goes over a full retouch of the image step by step including levels adjustment layer, curves adjustment layer, gradients and much more. This video has a lot of techniques and a lot of things to learn if you are not familiar with them – not just for creating the final effect but also just for better retouching in general.

We already looked at different types of vintage effects in both Photoshop and Lightroom on Anthony Morganti “Creating a Vintage Film Look to Your Images in Lightroom“, Pye’s video “Creating a Vintage Cross Processed Image Look in Lightroom” as well as two videos looking on reaching the same loon in Photoshop – both by Aaron Nacefrom Phlearn – “How to Make a Vintage Photo” and “How to Create a Vintage Photo in Photoshop“.
