Earlier today German manufacturer Zeiss announced a completely new family of lenses for Canon and Nikon mounts with no less than 6 lenses ranging from 21mm-100mm.
Just like the Otus (and other existing ZE- and ZF.2-Mount lenses from Zeiss) all Milvus lenses will have manual focus only (due to licencing issues with Canon/Nikon), However unlike the Otus line, the Milvus family adds weather sealing. Another interesting new feature of the new line is called the “De-Click” – which changes the mechanical grid of the aperture and makes the lens aperture change smoothly using a small metal accessory. In this way you can use the Milvus lenses for both still and video easily (Zeiss does mention that the new lenses should resolve up to 6K of video footage).
DeClick option – for both stills and video work
The lenses in the Milvus line have a sleek design which look similar to the Otus but if you look carefully you can see some design differences in the focus ring for example. At least 2 of the 6 new lenses have a completely new optical design compared to existing Zeiss lenses (50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4) and all Milvus lenses has new coatings which should fight flare better (the Otus are exceptional already in this respect).
Also worth mentioning is that the 2/50M and 2/100M are both macro lenses (1:2 max magnification) and that although you can can natively use all 6 lenses only on Canon or Nikon Cameras, you can use an adapter and work with them on Sony A7 cameras.
The entire Zeiss Milvus line – 21mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, 50mm f/2 and 100mm f/2
