Zacuto Micro Boom

Zacuto developed a compact boom arm with a small mic designed for run-and-gun shooting where you don’t want (or simply can’t) use a lav mic on your talent and instead use a tiny boom arm going from the camera just above the talent (this is designed for

The unit is designed as a telescoping carbon fiber boom extending between 35-89cm (14″-35”) with a shielded built-in 3.5mm cable inside. The unit doesn’t come with a microphone but any small 3.5mm boom mic that is under 60g should work.

The Zacuto Micro Boom sells for just over $130.

SmallHD Ultra 7

SmallHD released a new version of its flagship 7″ monitor with many improvements including 2300nits of brightness, PageOS 5 User Interface, IP53 Rating, HDMI and 6G-SDI inputs and outputs, Optional ARRI/Sony VENICE camera control via the Ethernet port, and more.

The new operating system brings a lot of advanced capabilities including EL Zone Exposure Assist, advanced waveform, false color, Teradek RT overlays, and a lot more.

Pricing is set at around $3000.

Hyper Thunderbolt 5 Dock

One announcement that surprised us was the Hyper Thunderbolt 5 Dock. At the moment there are no TB5-supported devices on the market and as far as we know no upcoming devices were even shown to arrive at CES this year (Apple also did not show anything on this front and the company has been historically one of the biggest supporters of the TB protocol).

Regardless Hyper announced the first TB5 dock with support of up to three 4K144Hz extended displays, 140W EPR PD 3.1 Passthrough Power Delivery, PCle Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD, 5Gbps Ethernet and 2x Data Transfer bandwidth at 80Gbps & 3x Thunderbolt 5 Downstream Ports for 120Gbps boosted bandwidth.

The HyperDrive Next Thunderbolt 5 Dock currently sells for $400.

Huion Kamvas Pro 24

Huion has been making drawing tablets for years and its most advanced model is the new Kamvas Pro 24. This 23.8″ model has a panel with 4K resolution, 140% SRGB, 1200:1 contrast ratio, 178 degrees viewing angle, and supports quantum dot technology (QLED) for more vivid colors.

The tablet supports the PenTech 3.0 with 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity. It includes HDMI, Displayport, and USB-C. Petapixel reviewed the Huion Kamvas Pro 24 (read here).

The Kamvas Pro 24 (4K) sells for $1300.

ZGCINE Dual V-mount USB-C charger

ZGCINE recently introduced a new series of compact V-mount batteries (with USB-C charging, USB-A, 12V, 8V and D-tap). For us, the more interesting product is a dual V-mount charger which is both DC and USB-C.

The ZGCINE ZG-X99 sells for $220.

The ZGCINE VM-C2 Dual Charger Kit sells for $120.

BullseyeBore Core

This one is a nonphotographic product but I felt I needed to include it since it can be super useful if you are doing DIY stuff (which we do a LOT in our studio). The simple idea behind this Kickstarter is to provide a small tool that goes onto a drill and paints laser circles around the area where you drill.

If the circles align correctly you are drilling in a perpendicular way, if not you need to change the angle. This is a very simple visual way to drill straight. From our perspective, this is very useful for DIY work like tapping where you first need to drill a hole before you tap (or insert a threaded insert which we often do to connect all sorts of things to wood).

Two units cost just under $140 on pre-order on Indigogo.

Nano Capture

This one is kind of strange. If you wanted a tiny camera (around the size of a matchbox but fully functional with a screen shutter button and even some filters the Nano capture project might pick your interest.

Update: apparently “Funding for this project was suspended by Kickstarter” so you will not be able to support this tiny retro camera at this point.

Phil Edwards on the NASA Earthrise image

On his YouTube channel, Phil Edwards decided to take a closer look at one of the most famous images ever taken by NASA astronauts back in 1968 during the Appolo 8 mission around the moon. There were a lot of complex aspects to this shoot both prior to the mission and during the mission itself and Edwards discusses some of them in the very well-made video below.
