How to Colorize in Photoshop

On this basic video tutorial Aaron Nace from Phlearn how to colorize the hair (and eyelids of a model in Photoshop – you will be able to use this technique for any object.

This video is both extensive and full of useful tips which are not necessarily related to colorizing so watch this even if you don’t intend to colorize anything anytime soon..

Here are the general steps that Nace takes in this video (you actually need to watch the whole thing if you want all the details:

  • Make a selection – he suggest to go to select>color range.
  • Go to layer>adjustment>hue-saturation.
  • Hold ALT/OPTN and click on the layer mask of the Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer and paint white or black with the Brush Tool set to ‘Overlay’ Blend Mode.
  • click on the ‘Colorize’ Button in the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Properties window.

There is much more in this video like a tip on how to create two layer masks for the same layer and much more.

Changing colors in Photoshop is a very popular topic which we covered here extensively for example on “How to Change the Color of Anything in Photoshop” and on “How to Select and Change Colors in Photoshop” by Nace as well as our own video on the topic: “LensVid Editing Tip: Replacing Color of an Object in Photoshop“. If you are interested in working with colors be sure to check out this page on LensVid.
