How to Remove a Tattoo in Photoshop

Removing a tattoo in Photoshop might sound simple but doing it in way that will preserve skin details and look realistic is a challenge. On this video tutorial by Aaron Nace from Phlearn looks at the different steps you need to take to do that correctly using Adobe Photoshop.

Nace’s first step, is to use the Spot Healing Brush Tool. Be sure that this tool is set to the Normal Mode, and that the Type is set to Content Aware. Sample All Layers should also be checked and when you use it sample both the area you want to remove and some area around. Also remember to do all of this on a new layer.

On step two Nace paint on this layer. So we start a new layer with a large brush and one with low hardness. Make sure you sample from different areas with different tones.

The final step is adding skin texture back. Now you add a 50% grey layer and change the blending mode to overlay. The grey becomes invisible and we will use it as our base. Now we will add some noise, blur and emboss to make the skin look more realistic.

This is not the first time that we are looking at using the Spot Healing Brush Tool. You can also check out  Nino Batista video on Using Photoshop’s Healing Tools which can help you get the hang of things.
