How to use the Sponge Tool in Photoshop CC

On this video, portrait photographer Nathaniel Dodson (from the website tutvid), looks at another tool in Photoshop and this time he focuses on the Sponge tool in Photoshop CC.

Like any other brush based tool the sponge allows you to increase and decrease the size, change the hardness, use a custom brush etc. What you actually do with this tool is either increase the saturate locally or decrease it where you use the brush. You can switch between these option using shift + (and again shift plus to change back).

Using desaturate you can remove some haze (although there might be better tools for that) and can add some vibrance to the rest of the image using the saturate.

Remember that this is a pretty “destructive tool” (although you can always apply it to a new layer) so use it carefully.
