On this short video tutorial photographer Nathaniel Dodson (from the website tutvid) explains the basics of the two types of healing brushes in Photoshop.
Dodson starts with the spot healing brush and works none destructively by creating a new layer and selecting sample all layer and start fixing some skin issues in his image.
The second brush is the regular healing brush sample from an area and allows you to fix a problem – if you have an edge you can sample the same edge from a different location and continue from that (playing with the diffusion option might also help in some cases).
If you don’t like the new healing brush you can use the legacy one in the preferences in the tools and choose the legacy healing brush.
We have covered the healing brush extensively in the past in many videos – you can find all of them on this link.
