On these two quick videos, portrait photographer Nathaniel Dodson (from the website tutvid), looks at two sets of simple tools in Photoshop – the Lasso tools and the marquee tools and shows how to use them as well as some simple but useful tips that you might not be aware of.
In Photoshop CC there are 3 types of lasso tools – the basic lasso for free hand selections, the polygonal lasso tool for straight line selections and the magnetic lasso tool which fixes to existing objects in an image.
Some useful tips from Dodson on this one – use the shift/alt to add or remove things from your selection (alt D clears the selection as always). The same keys with the polygonal lasso will either make you draw a rightist selection line or make you go back to your original point. Finally the magnetic lasso which is not perfect but if you do want to use it try and play with the frequency – or the number of dots which attach to an object one after another).
