Not every innovation needs to be big or complex, sometimes it is the small little things that make the most impact on the way we shoot daily. The new ArcaSmart quick release plate by Benro is just such a device and it can save you the pain of taking a dedicated smartphone holder with you everywhere you use a tripod.
If you travel a lot (as much as the current global situation allows of course), and you take your tripod with you and you sometimes want to use your smartphone on the tripod as well you probably have a smartphone holder with a 1/4″ 20 mount somewhere in your kit.
That is, of course, fine but those things tend to get lost and you need to remember to take them with you plus many of them are just not very good (we actually prefer the Glif smartphone holder which worked very well for us over the past two years – we have 3 units).
Benro want you to get rid of those holders altogether and released an Arca Swiss compatible quick release plate that has a retracting metal smartphone holder unit that can hold
The holder can take more or less any smartphone (even with a thin case) between 2.1-3.3″ (around 5-8.5cm) wide (these are most of the units on the market right now).
One nice added bonus – you can mount accessories on the upper part of the holder using the built-in a cold shoe so if you want to attach a mic or light you can easily do that.
As for pricing, this unit currently sells on B&H for just under $60.
