First Look at the new Canon 5D S and 5D R

Earlier today Canon introduced several new products just in time for the upcoming CP+ show that will open in a few days in Japan. Among those products are two variantsĀ of a new 50MP

The above extensive official video from Canon showsĀ Rudy Winston from Canon Digital Learning Center discussing several aspects of the two new cameras including the differences between them, their place in the Canon line (note – the 5D MK III is not going anywhere – for now).

The Canon EOS 5D S and R – the megapixel war is on

Here is a quick look at some of the main features of the new Canon 5D S and R cameras:

  • Sensor: 50.6 MP resolution Full Frame CMOS sensor (in the R version it comes without AA filter for even sharper images).
  • Processor: dualĀ  DIGIC 6.
  • Sensitivity: 100-6400 ISO.
  • Focus system: 61 AF points (41 cross type).
  • Video:Ā same as the 5D MK III (but with no HDMI pass-through or headphone jack – this isn’t your ideal HDSLR camera).
  • LCD: 3.2ā€³ 1040k dots screen.
  • Flicker Mode – for avoiding flickering light issues.
  • Shutter: 30-1/8000 sec.
  • Continuous shooting speed: 5Ā fps.
  • Build: Magnesium alloy body, shutter durability rated up to 150,000 cycles, dust and weather resistance.
  • Weight: 930Ā grams (32.8 oz).
  • Price: $3700 body only for the Canon 5D S and $3900 for the 5D R (but you will have to wait until the second half of 2015 to get your hands on one).

DPR published an interesting video interview where Richard Butler talks to Canon’s Chuck Westfall about the two new cameras:

Here are a few points about them from the interview:

  • According toĀ Westfall Canon developed and manufactured the sensor on it’s own (no Sony here connection…).
  • The dynamic range is the same as what you might find on the 5D MKIII (disappointing?).
  • Sensitivity is likely to be close to that of the 7D MKII (nice but far below that of the best Nikon/Sony FF cameras).
  • The R version is a more specialized version ideal for landscape architecture uses (and basically any type of shooting when you are less likely to find Ā moirĆ©/aliasing).
  • The new sRAW modes are made with events photographers in mind (you have both 28MP and 12 MP options).
  • The mirror mechanism was redesigned to make the shooting process more stable.
