Italian manufacturer Maxima recently announced a new COB professional light that uses a new technology that it claims find its way to the lighting industry for the first time. The Maxima 6 uses high-efficiency GaN or Gallium Nitride technology which the company claims is being used for the first time in the lighting industry and allows for reduced weight and higher power efficiency.
About Maxima
Maxima Lighting Solutions is an innovative Italian manufacturer. Back in 2021, we covered the first light the company developed, the Maxima 3 (see full article here). As we have mentioned in our article, unlike many other manufacturers Maxima decided on a very ambitious goal – design and manufacture everything in-house with Italian-made components. This is not a simple task, especially in the post-pandemic area.
Interestingly, China recently announced that it has plans to ban the export of gallium (China holds over 97% of the global gallium supply), if this will happen it can send shockwaves through many industries but also potentially slow down the adoption of this promising technology.
The new Maxima 6 GaN COB LED
Maxima 6 GaN
Maxima 6 is a 600Watt daylight COB LED which uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) circuitry. This allows it to produce more output (up to 69,000 lumens @1m) at a very light weight of only 4kg/8.8lbs and a very small form factor.
Maxima 6 has some other interesting advantages like being able to accept any Profoto accessory natively or simply slide in the Bowens Mount Locking Ring or even an Arri QLM adapter.
The light has a very high color accuracy (98 CRI with R9 96.2 and R12 94.1 according to the company) and is tested against flicker up to 200.000 fps. Maxima also claims that despite its small size it produces extremely low noise levels due to the high efficiency of the GaN circuitry it uses.
There is more. The company states that the light comes with a “Hyperbolic Lens” which means that it actually provides a larger luminous output and a more precise coverage of typical softboxes and lanterns.

The company offers an app that allows the user to control up to 8 units and the light comes in a hard case and is fully weatherproof.
When it comes to powering the light there are even more surprises. You can use the existing 4-bay V-mount Maxima Battery Box or plug it into an Arri, Bebop®, FxLion, etc. battery sources thanks to GaN technology, which accepts any DC input ranging from 35 to 75 Volts.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the new light is around $3K (depending on the accessories you choose) and is already available from the Maxima website.
