Author: Iddo Genuth

On this video from National Geographic Live! award-winning filmmakers and National Geographic Explorers Dereck and Beverly Joubert talk about their work and the stories behind some of African’s species key species.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert have dedicated over 3 decades of their lives to protecting and saving some of the major species in Africa and recording their efforts.  Through the years the couple created more than 25 films for National Geographic and written no less than 11 books.

They also founded the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic, which currently funds 86 grants in 27 countries.

there are 4 key points that the Joubert identified that is causing the steep decline in the number of big cats in Africa including: habitat loss, pouching, hunting  and local communities (who are in conflict with the big cats and animals).

It seems that thorough their initiatives and using photography (and videography) as tools the couple has been able to make some real changes but there is still a lot of work to be done.
