In 2007 American artist and photographer Taryn Simon created the American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar – a collection of images of places which are inaccessible or unknown to a public audience.
In the following TED talk she discusses this project as well as a previous project known as The Innocents from 2003 which shows images (and stories) of individuals who were wrongly sentenced to death or life sentences, and were released due to DNA evidence.
