DJI cold shoe (00:34)

If you are using the older Gen 1 DJI mic and hate the connection to the hot shoe there are some options. These come in the form of a 3D printer part that you can print or buy printed and help secure the receiver into the hot shoe of the camera.

iFootage Gazelle TC3B Tripod Review (02:37)

Ulanzi U-mic Review (04:42)

A few weeks back Lew tested the very affordable wireless UMIC from Ulanzi. It’s an interesting budget option for beginners and can be a nice backup or even be used as a mic that you are OK risking when you don’t want to risk your expensive high-end system.

AM18 currently sells for just under $100.

Zhyiun M20C review (06:28)

The Zhyiun FIVERAY M20c sells for around $80.

Upcoming Canon R1 (08:12)

Back in mid-May, Canon announced that they are working on a new upcoming flagship mirrorless camera – the R1. This camera which has been rumored for a very long time will have a look that is fairly similar (although not identical) to the existing R3 with its full body but with several improved capabilities and possibly a slightly different emphasis.

We still don’t have any real specifications but here is what Canon had to say about the camera:

This camera employs the newly developed image processor DIGIC Accelerator in addition to the pre-existing processor DIGIC X. The new image processing system, composed of these processors and a new CMOS sensor, enables large volumes of data to be processed at high speeds and delivers never-before-seen advancements in Auto Focus (AF) and other functions.

By combining the new image processing system and deep learning technology to an advanced degree, Canon has achieved high-speed and high-accuracy subject recognition. For example, subject tracking accuracy has been improved so that in team sporting events where multiple subjects intersect, the target subject can continually be tracked even if another player passes directly in front of them. In addition, the AF “Action Priority” function recognizes subject movement by rapidly analyzing the subject’s status. In moments during a sports game when it is difficult to predict what will happen next, this function automatically determines the player performing a certain action, such as shooting a ball, as the main subject and instantly shifts the AF frame, thereby helping to capture decisive moments of gameplay.

There is very little official info on the R1 at the moment – see here.

Canon opens RF-S mount (11:13)

Ever since Canon introduced its RF mount in 2018 it has been criticized for not allowing third-party manufacturers to sell RF lenses with AF (it can’t prevent MF lenses but those are far less popular).

Several weeks ago Canon apparently took the first important step towards opening its RF mount by allowing 3’rd party manufacturers to sell RF-S lenses. This means that Canon APS-C users will soon have access to many Sigma, Tamron and possibly other lenses from different manufacturers increasing the attractiveness of the system that until now suffered from a lack of lens options.

This is of course great news but we are still wondering when Canon will open the RF mount itself (Full Frame), something that can make the system much more attractive.

Fujifilm GFX 100S II and XT-50 (15:55)

Fujifilm recently released several new products including a second version of its medium format more affordable GFX100, a 100MP camera (more specs and info here) as well as a very interesting 500mm f/5.6 telephoto prime lens (the angle of view is closer to 400mm on 35mm equivalent sensor).

The second camera introduced by Fujifilm is the XT-50 with a 40MP Sensor and X-Processor 5 as well as image stabilization up to 7 stops and Film Simulation dial and more. The company also launched a new 16-50mm F2.8-4.8. zoom lens for the X series cameras.

Panasonic Lumix S9 (24:11)

The announcement of the Panasonic Lumix S9 sparked a big discussion online about the ethics of camera manufacturers and review sites. Can you really do an honest in-depth camera review in two days? Do camera reviewers feel obligated to the manufacturer for sending them to hotels halfway across the world to try a new camera?

We are not going to solve all these issues here but we can say that our reviews never take two days (or typically even two weeks) and are more often than not closer to two months (especially with more complex products like cameras or lenses).

The Panasonic Lumix S9 is a new compact mirrorless camera 24.2MP (full frame). It has some interesting features like a 30 fps pre-burst shooting, a Real-time LUT button, Autofocus detection for human, animal, car, and motorcycle subjects, and more.

The camera sells for around $1500.

Zhyiun Molus G300 and B series Lights (30:04)

Westcott fusion light control system (37:32)

Westcott introduced an interesting lighting modifier called fusion developed in collaboration with Photographer Sal Cincotta.

According to Westcott, this system includes “reflectors, diffusers, scrims, and backdrops – all mountable on a collapsible 4 x 6′ aluminum frame – and offers different surfaces for reflecting, blocking, or diffusing light. The kit includes three 4 x 6′ multiuse panels, one black and white, one silver and sunlight, and one full diffusion. The silver and sunlight panel also comes with a removable shoot-through window, that, combined with bounced available light, acts as the second light in a 2-light setup to add fill light for full-body portraits“.

The system sells for $250.

Blackmagic Camera app for Android (41:36)

The popular iOS camera app from Blackmagic is finally available on Android as well (a week or so after we recorded this episode). Just keep in mind that it currently supports only a handful of the Google Pixel and Samsung new Galaxy phones.

You can download the Blackmagic camera Android app from the Google Play store.

If you like to install it on unsupported devices there is a workaround (see the link on the Michael Tobin video description – but do this at your own risk!).
