IBC 2023

As we are writing this we are on our way to Amsterdam for the largest expo in Europe in the video, Cine, and broadcast industry – IBC. We covered IBC 2022 last year and this year we have plans for our coverage with planned live videos and shorts, new sponsors, and a lot of interesting interviews.

If you have any questions that you want us to ask during the show (we have many scheduled interviews including one with Sony and Black Magic Design) please let us know in the comments. We can’t make any promises but we will do our best.

Godox AD-S200 Stick Flash Head for AD200/AD200Pro

Godox recently released a very interesting tube-shaped lighting accessory. While we have seen many tube-shaped LEDs this is the first tube-shaped strobe. This AD-S200 unit is actually an accessory to the popular AD200\AD200PRO flashes from Godox (they connect to those heads physically with a relatively long cable and have removable barn doors for shaping the light.

Godox sent us a unit to review and we are going to use it in the studio for product photography. We shall bring you our results at a later date. The Godox AD-S200 Stick Flash is available at B&H.

Ulanzi U-Mic Wireless Lavalier Microphone System

It seems like everybody is making wireless mic systems these days. Ulnazi just joined the club with their own U-Mic system. This dual-mic system has a charging case, a range of 100m, and up to 14 hours of internal recording.

But the big plus of this mic system is not in its features but in its price tag which is currently just under $100 making it the most affordable dual mic system that we know of. We will be testing this new system in the next few weeks and post our review here.

Photosynthesis photography: Making images with living plant leaves

Google Life science engineer Ben Krasnow has a unique and exceptionally in-depth YouTube channel called Applied Science. In a recent video, he covered the topic of Photosynthesis photography. The idea came to him from an old British TV which showed this technique.

We are not going to dive too deep into this technique here (just watch the video) but the basic idea is to use sunlight to imprint an image on a living leaf of a plant. In some respects, this is similar to the process of developing film but the details are different, and acquiring some of the materials required might be a little tricky.

Tamron’s upcoming 17-50mm F/4 Di III VXD

Tamron recently announced that it is developing a new 17-50mm F4 lens. Like most development announcements we do not have too much information at the moment aside from it using a 67mm front filter thread but it is going to be an interesting option for those looking for an ultra-wide to normal lens at a compact size.

A little more from Tamron’s website.

Godox FH50Bi and FH50R flexible LED

Godox announced two new smaller flexible LED panels. The bi-color and RGB FH50 models. These lights are 50W each and have a frame but can be bent outside or inside to create different angles.

The FH50 family and its accessories are available on B&H.

There is an interesting upcoming feature in Luminar NEO. It is called studio lights and it allows the user to create any number of virtual lights and change their properties and location in the frame. Even more interesting, you can simulate the use of gobos and color gels to create all sorts of creative options.

We are not sure when this feature will be available, but we can’t wait to test it out.

OWC Jupiter Mini NAS

OWC is entering the NAS market with a powerful series called Jupiter aimed at those who are looking for professional solutions in either desktop or rackmount solutions. The new units have 10GbE connections with the desktop version supporting 5 bays.

Pricing is in tune with what you might expect from a pro-business solution with 20-100TB of storage.

Smartphones and more particularly iPhones have become the most ubiquitous photography tools of recent years. It’s no wonder that more and more companies are trying to develop grips and other accessories to help users make the most out of these advanced highly portable cameras.

MIOPS which is known for its smart trigger units recently launched a Kickstarter project for a device called Spark. This unit is an iPhone holder with a large number of physical keys which allows the user to control the iPhone and using a special app perform different functions that are not found normally on the phone turning it closer to an actual camera.

The unit is kind of big but this has to do with the way it holds the smartphone. The unit can also easily change the orientation of the phone.

More on the Spark on the project Kickstarter page.

ZEAPON Tech AXIS slider

So far we haven’t covered any sliders on LensVid Talk, however, ZEAPON just came out with a new motorized unit called Axis which can be configured with either a single pan motor or with two motors supporting both pan and tilt functions.

This is not the first time we are seeing this type of modular solution but ZEAPON got some very positive reviews in the past and it will be interesting to see how the Axis will fair vs. the competition.

Strobes have a standard shape. They are all thick cylinder-shaped objects and typically take quite a bit of storage space in your bag. But what if you could make a strobe that will have a different shape, one which might be easier to carry? Neewer had exactly this idea in mind when it developed the Q4 strobe.

This unit looks like a thick square block with a bulb stuck in the front but it is far shorter than any comparable strobe producing officially 400Ws. It uses a Bowens mount and has a removable battery so it can be used anywhere.

In our view, this is a neat idea if there is a simple way of removing the bulb from the front of the light and storing it securely. You can order the Q4 on B&H.

Matthews Mini Boom Rolling Kit

The next product is not exactly new. The components have been around for a while but Matthews is now selling them as a kit and they allow for a very compact rolling boom stand which can be super useful when you want portability and the ability to pack your gear into a smaller size.

The Matthews Mini Boom Rolling Kit is available on B&H.

Wise Advanced CF-A memory cards

We have reviewed many CF-Express Type A cards here on LensVid. However, pricing was (and to some degree still is) the main issue with these cards which are still more expensive per GB compared to the faster CF-B cards.

Taiwanese manufacturer Wise Advanced recently announced two CF-A memory cards in the 160GB (Pro) and 512GB sizes both cost under $250 with the main difference between the two being the promised minimum transfer rate of the Pro version which is rated at 400MB\s.

Godox MLP19K | 26K | 36K PROJECTION ATTACHMENT

Finally, we have yet another Godox product and this one is an interesting accessory for an existing light that we reviewed here a while back (and liked a lot) – the ML60. This was one of the smallest 60W lights when it came out and is still a very compact and capable unit even today.

The new Godox ML projection attachment adds the ability to use gobos, gels, and cutters to the ML60 making it a much more versatile light the unit itself seems to be well-built and relatively compact and it comes with 3 different lens options.

The ML30\ML60 projection attachment is available on B&H.
