UPERFECT 17″ Mobile 4K Monitor Review (Model: UGame J5) Large portable monitor with VESA

Today we are taking a look at a modern 17″ mobile monitor called the Uperfect UGame J5 that can be used on the go with laptops or as a secondary monitor on a desktop setup.

UPERFECT

Uperfect monitors have been around for a few years, and they offer a pretty wide range of portable monitors for travel, gaming, content creation, and productivity. Today, we’re taking a look at the UGame J5 monitor.

Concept

This thin and portable display weighs in at just 1kg and comes in an aluminum body with multiple power options and seamless integration. For an easy setup, it also features a Vesa mount. It does lack a touch screen and a battery which would have made it heavier and more expensive.

In the box

Uperfect ships this unit in a cardboard box. The kit includes a protective cover, a power adapter, and cables (USB-C and HDMI).

Design and build

The cover has a textured finish and doubles as a stand with two viewing angles. It has a magnetic hold for easy deployment. Somehow Uperfect didn’t think of a clasp to improve the portability. A simple magnetic flap would’ve been great.

The thin aluminum frame is a simple design with thin bezels on the sides and the top. The back features Vesa support which we really like and this single feature makes this unit stand out from the crowd compared to many other mobile displays which you can buy nowadays.

On the left side of the panel, there are menu control buttons and a micro-USB OTG. The right side of the panel features a USB-C and HDMI port for video transmission, a USB-C PD port for charging, and a headphone jack.

Features

The Uperfect UGame J5 has a 4K 16:9 60Hz panel with a high contrast ratio and a calibrated Adobe Color Gamut (Uperfect states an Adobe RGB coverage of 100%). The viewing angle is pretty wide, but some brightness loss is visible at the extremes.

The display comes with speakers, but the audio quality isn’t very good. We also noticed that this audio driver would cause random glitches. When testing the display without audio, it was a lot more stable.

Tests

We performed several tests on the monitor using the  i1Display Pro with the i1Profiler software to test for the monitor brightness and uniformity and you can see the (positive) results below:

When it comes to colors we used the i1Display Pro with the great free DisplayCAL (3) software and got the following results in terms of Gamut coverage (and Gamut value):

In Use

We connected the Uperfect UGame J5 to a number of PCs and Macs. Some Windows machines would have a problem connecting to the monitor. The process was a lot more seamless on Macs, requiring only one USB-C cable. We contacted Uperfect about these issues, and they assured us that it is a rare compatibility issue and that they are working on a fix.

Because of the portability and easy setup, this unit is great for use as a reference monitor, additional editing real estate, or even a camera preview. The colors look good and the glare-free finish makes the Uperfect UGame J5 a pretty versatile unit for many use cases.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this Uperfect display is a useful tool for photo and video work. It’s portable and easy to operate. Once Uperfect figures out compatibility issues, it’ll be even more seamless to connect and preview.
