Lighting the Old Train – Mixing HMI and LED Lights

In this video, photographer Jay P. Morgan from the website the Slanted Lens takes us behind the scences of a large scale photo shoot project in the Orange Empire Railway Museum, where he recreated the look of a train with World War II soldiers going off to war and kissing their loved ones as they leave.

The technical challenge of this project was to light the entire (very large) outdoor scene using a mix of HMI and LED lights. For the HMI Morgan used a very powerful 1800 watts Arri M18 HMI which runs off a single 20-amp circuit and several LED lights.

This is actually not the first time Morgan uses a mix of different lights – in a previus video we saw How to Properly Balance Light Bulbs with Strobes and how to combine Daylight with LED Lights (on this video Morgan used a NorthStar Lite LED – the same pro light he used on this video which sales on Amazon for just under $1150).
