Last month photographer Tony Northrup and his wife Chelsea decided to look at one of the most popular professional lenses around – the Nikon 24-70mm and compare it to the Tamron 24-70mm.
So can you really save around $600 and buy the Tamron instead of the Nikon? on this 7 min video looks at different aspects of both lenses including handling of contrast and flare (advantage Nikon), sharpness wide open (Advantage Tamron), sharpness closed down (about the same), focusing (about the same as well), focus distance (the Nikon wins – the Tamron isn’t really 70mm at closer range), slow shutter speed (The Tamron wins big time as it has built in IS).
This is not the first time we are looking at the Tamron 24-70mm here. In the past we had a great video by photographer Matthew Gore entitled “Head to Head Lens Review: Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II USM vs Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD“.
If you are fine with its shortcomings the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD is currently going $1300 at B&H.
