Today we are going to take a look at behind-the-scenes videos looking at the production and shooting of two product commercials shot by Romanian photographer and director Alexandru Don (he has a great YouTube channel so give him some love).
A pick behind the scenes of an Ice Cream Commercial
The first, and significantly bigger production was for the Romanian ice cream manufacturer la-strada. Don was acting as the main photographer for this production using his Z2 camera (which apparently is not the most stable camera in the world)on top of a Ronin 2 gimbal.
There is a lot of camera movement in this commercial and Don used his hoverboard skills to drive past by the actors. There were a lot of challenges shooting in bright daylight. To be able to shoot the production used a 4X4 (half a stop) which had to be moved on wheels to each location.
Lights were also used for the production (Forza 500) either in the shadow or together with natural sunlight. To get a lot of the out-of-focus backgrounds shots aperture was set on the DZOFilm VESPID 50mm to T2.1 which is not an easy task for a focus puller. Even more challenging was shooting with a 100mm macro and even though this is only T2.8 nailing to focus was very hard and there were several shots that needed to be shot again.
For the second video (you can see Don’s behind the scenes below), there was very little time and apparently also a much more limited budget forcing Don’s to take on a more active role in the production. This entire shot was done handheld with lights both indoors and out and all in a matter of a few hours.
Second video: low budget quick turnaround
