Accsoon TopRig S60 Motorized Camera Slider Review Is this the perfect compact slider?

It’s been over a year since our last slider review but today we have a chance to test the latest compact motorized slider by Accsoon with some interesting features – the Accsoon TopRig S60.

Accsoon specializes in wireless video transmission systems. We’ve reviewed their wireless follow-focus and mobile monitoring system in the past. And today we’re looking at Accsoon’s first motorized camera slider.

Concept

The Toprig is a compact slider that promises smooth and quiet operation and precise controls with a payload of up to 4kg (8.8 lbs). There are 2 models available: ours is the S60, and there’s also the shorter S40.

In the box

Accsoon ships Toprig S60 in a padded carrying bag. It would’ve been nice if the bag had extra space for a fluid head. There is also a spare belt in the kit. (The S40 doesn’t come with a bag).

Design and build

The slider has a compact design. It’s a solid metal frame with a grooved rubber belt. When the motor isn’t powered on, the belt is free to move, in case you need to do a manual slide.

The carriage comes with a retractable 3/8 to ¼” mounting screw. To mount the slider, there is a single 3/8 and multiple ¼” mounting holes on the bottom. The end ¼” mounts come with locating pins, perfect for mounting accessories or support rods.

For tabletop use, the slider comes with adjustable rubber feet that can also be removed for transport. There is a bubble on the top to make sure the slider is leveled.

Compact but well-built

Features

One of the main features of the Toprig slider is the parallax rail. It allows to center the camera on a subject or pan to the sides while moving from one end to the other. This is really useful for product photography, interviews, and even landscapes and real estate shots.

The motor runs off an NPF battery or DC power. The unit also features a 5V USB-C out to power a small monitor or another accessory. There is also a camera port triggers the shutter from the app for timelapse photography.

The speed control knob is a great feature. It allows you to seamlessly and precisely control the slide between just 1cm in 10 seconds (great for macro product shots) to 5cm per second (great for landscapes).

We did a test at full speed with a 200mm lens. This is the worst-case scenario, and of course, there were some jitters. While full speed could probably be used for a wide-angle slow-motion shot of a landscape. For interviews, for example, it would probably be best to go about half-speed.

Controls

The Toprig slide controls are very simple and intuitive. There is an on/off button, a start/stop button, and a toggle between looping and 1-time slide.

When powered on, the slider will auto-calibrate by going to the extremes. After calibration, you can set A/B points, by stopping the slide and clicking the AB button. When A/B points are recorded, the indicator light will come on.

Accsoon also provides the Toprig app to control the slides remotely. It’s a simple interface that allows to do manual slides, set A/B points, and prompt the motor calibration. There is no speed control through the app.

For timelapses, the app has interval and speed control, but you’ll need to connect the unit to the camera.

Conclusion

We’ve been using Accsoon’s Toprig slider in interviews, and it’s provided very smooth footage without jerky rebounds. The lowest speed setting is really good for macro shots.

The slider is very portable and well-made. The only thing that might be a hassle is replacing the belt. It doesn’t look like it’s a quick install.
