Godox Electric Diffusion Prototype (IBC 2024) Godox' take on electronic diffusion

During IBC 2024 we visited the Godox booth and saw not only the upcoming MS60 mini LED ecosystem but also a prototype of an electronic diffusion system the company is currently developing.

Electronic Diffusion background

Electronic diffusion technology is nothing new. We have been covering different companies such as Chimera and Zylight way back in 2017 and more recently LuminArc (who also teamed up with Zylight) last year with a unit that looks almost identical to the one Godox was demonstrating in this year’s IBC.

Here is a quick reminder about the LuminArc electronic diffusion that is already available on the market. It comes in two sizes 40×40 and 24×36 (with plans for 4×4 and 6×6 in the future) It can reduce between 1-1.5 stops of light and have at most around 80K color shift (basically negligible). The unit can be powered via AC or a V-mount battery and has a very low power consumption it uses a V-mount for power (pricing for the 40×40 inch version is set for around $2300).

Godox Electric Diffusion

We have little to no official information about the Godox version of the electronic diffusion. It also seems to be powered by a V-mount battery and can receive commands via DMX or a controller unit.

On the prototype that we played around with the changes in diffusion were very slow (O.K. if you set it off camera but if you want to change the diffusion as an effect on camera it’s not ideal). We hope to see the finished version sometime in 2025 with a faster speed and maybe also app support.
